INTERNSHIPS

POSITION SUMMARY: 

This internship position supports Valleyhaven Furniture Bank to coordinate all aspects of the pickup and delivery process, and to engage community members, donors and volunteers, helping to grow the Valleyhaven program.

Supervisor: Executive Director

Term: One semester, Academic year, Summer, or Calendar year

Academic Credit: If available through your college/university, Valleyhaven Furniture Bank will complete any necessary forms to demonstrate eligibility

Hours and Commitment: 8-15 hours per week (based on internship requirements and availability) for up to one year

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:  

  • Coordinate and organize the logistics and communications for weekly pickups and deliveries for furniture donors, Valleyhaven clients and volunteer drivers. Assist with furniture pickups and deliveries including driving and lifting/carrying.  
  • Database entry. Track and record client furniture needs and record customer statistics. Work directly with clients and donors to fulfill needs.  
  • Maintain Facebook page and social media presence.  
  • Review current branding/messaging and update for maximum consistency and impact.  
  • Outreach to increase volunteer and donor base – help with outreach materials, updating volunteer and donor opportunities.  
  • Research new funding opportunities.  
  • Compile surveys for customers, donors and volunteers.  
  • Administrative and other duties as assigned. 

 

DESIRABLE SKILLS:  

  • Creativity and enthusiasm  
  • Self-motivation, ability to prioritize and complete tasks independently  
  • Accuracy and attention to detail  
  • Background in Communications, Public Relations, Human Services or related field is a plus.  
  • Interest in applying learned skills in a hands-on environment  
  • Interest in volunteerism and homelessness  
  • Ability to lift furniture weighing 30 pounds or more 

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:  

Sitting, Standing, Walking, Lifting, Carrying. An ability to move furniture up and down stairs is required. 

 

VOLUNTEER REQUIREMENTS:  

Willingness to sign a volunteer agreement and complete a background check if asked. 

 

WORKING CONDITIONS:  

Some work to be done remotely via computer or phone. Some work is performed in our storage facility (“the barn”) in Winchester, VA. Driving within the agency’s service area for furniture pickups and deliveries may also be required.

Social Media: 

You’ll use your creativity and communication skills to manage our online presence and engage with our followers. You’ll create engaging content, share success stories, and promote upcoming events to increase our reach and impact.

 

Event Coordination and Support: 

Play a key role in planning and executing fundraising events and campaigns. From coordinating logistics to assisting with set-up and outreach, you’ll help ensure our events run smoothly and successfully, ultimately supporting our mission to furnish homes for families in need.

 

Warehouse Team: 

Join our Warehouse team and be at the heart of our operations. You’ll assist with sorting, organizing, and preparing furniture donations for distribution to families in need. Your efforts will directly contribute to making houses feel like homes for those we serve.

 

Donation Pickup Team: 

Hit the road with our Donation Pickup team and help collect furniture donations from generous donors in the community. You’ll provide excellent customer service, handle furniture with care, and ensure timely and efficient pickups, making it easy for donors to support our cause.

 

House Setup Team: 

Join our House Setup team and make a direct impact on the lives of families transitioning into stable housing. You’ll work hands-on to deliver and arrange furniture donations in clients’ homes, creating comfortable and functional living spaces. Your attention to detail and compassion will help transform empty houses into welcoming homes, providing a fresh start for those we serve.
